An interview with our Acupuncturist & Herbalist – Sonia Millett

What made you decide to be an Acupuncturist & Herbalist?

A friend who had just started studying Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was very passionately explaining how interesting his studies were.  I was looking for a new focus, having just given birth to my first child and so looked into enrolling in the same TCM course.  Then my second child was born with a general diagnosis of ‘failure to thrive’ and seemed to be in distress, particularly at night which was a very stressful time.  With no definitive diagnosis let alone any treatment options provided by my Pediatrician, I looked to TCM.  This seemed to be the only treatment that seemed to give him some relief.  I was then hooked and decided to join my friend in studying TCM.

For those not familiar with what you do, could you describe it?

I help to treat almost any condition or symptom using acupuncture, herbal medicine and supplements.  Most of my patients need help with fertility issues, pregnancy and womens’ and mens’ health, however I have helped people with many other conditions, including pain, autoimmunity and digestive related complaints.

In clinical practice is there any special area of interest that you like to support patients to manage?

I enjoy treating a variety of health conditions, but particularly enjoy treating any concerns during pregnancy, as well as preparing patients for an on-time and efficient labour.  I also enjoy interesting internal medicine conditions, and assisting with pain management.

What made you so passionate about supporting people in this particular area?

I am passionate about minimising the chances of overly-medicalised labours and pregnancy, and offering an alternative that is more empowering for the mother.

Was are your personal interests outside of clinic?

When time permits, I enjoy any type of sewing, knitting and similar creative hobbies.  In the past I have done some oil and watercolour painting, but this needs lots more time put in to practice!  Cooking lots of different cuisines, particularly desserts, has always been a passion, and of course eating out as well.  For fitness I enjoy yoga and walking Milly my energetic Spoodle.
