Osteopath Essendon

An interview with our Osteopath – Dr. Amy Ly

May 1, 2020

Dr. Amy Ly is a warm, passionate osteopath known for her thoroughness and attention to detail. Helping her patients in a professional and caring manner is a key priority. We ask her some questions about Osteopathy and why she is so passionate about the work she does.

What made you decide to be an osteopath?

I grew up as a sporty and active child. I had sustained many injuries which had an effect on my sporting performance and functions of daily living. Fortunate enough, I was recommended to see an osteopath at the time who was able to get me back on track with a holistic approach. As I got older, seeing my family and friends with acute and chronic pain was what inspired me to help others achieve optimal health and to pursue my career in Osteopathy.

For those not familiar with osteopathy can you describe what it is you do?

An osteopath will focus on the patient’s whole body. Every patient’s condition and injury is unique. This is why I like to take into account the patient’s lifestyle, emotional well being and environmental factors in addition to their physical symptoms.

A thorough case history will always be conducted followed by a physical assessment to understand the patient’s body and condition. A diagnosis is then formed. Treatment will consist of hands on treatment such as soft tissue work/massage, joint mobilisation, muscle energy technique (MET), manipulation, stretching and dry needling if appropriate. Advice and exercises may then be given as a self management program.

In clinical practice is there any special area of interest you like to support clients to manage?

Neck pain and low back pain. With the advance in technology and the time we spend on our gadgets there is no doubt our posture could be improved. Let alone the injuries and/or the strains that may occur from our activities of daily living or even from the natural changes of our body such as pregnancy.

What made you so passionate about supporting people in this particular area?

Neck and low back pain is the most common presentation that I see in practice. I enjoy educating my patients about their body and how everything is all connected. There is no better feeling than seeing my patients pain free and achieving their goal.

It really is amazing how the human body works from the moment we are born and the changes that occur as we enter the different stages of life.

What are your personal interests outside of clinic?

I like to go on an adventure that involves hiking to explore what nature has to offer and of course, to keep my body moving. On a gloomy day I will be indoor doing DIY crafts and spending time with my family and friends.
