About Essendon Melbourne

History

  • Historically, Essendon and the banks of the Maribyrnong River were initially occupied by the Wurundjeri group of the of the Kulin Aboriginal country.
  • The first European settlers arrived in 1803 and Essendon was named after the town of Essendon in Hertfordshire, England.
  • In 1851 the gold rush opened up the Moonee Ponds.
  • On 9 January 1871, the Victorian Railways administrations started amongst Essendon and Melbourne
  • In 1890, an enormous was built, initially known as Earslbrae Hall (home of Collier McCracken). The building now houses Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School.
  • In 1906 the North Melbourne Electric Tramway and Lighting Company opened its electric tramway framework connecting Essendon with the city
