If you’ve ever had acupuncture, you already know its potential to stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. However, given that acupuncture falls under the umbrella of traditional Chinese medicine, this leaves some confusion as to whether acupuncture treatment is covered by private health insurance in Australia.
There are currently almost 14 million Australians with private health insurance, and many of these policies cover extras like dental, eyecare, physiotherapy, podiatry and mental health therapy, among other things. However, having private health insurance in 2022 doesn’t necessarily mean you’re covered for things like acupuncture and massage – this will depend on your specific policy.
As for Medicare, there are some rare instances where acupuncture qualifies for rebates, but most of the time it isn’t covered by Medicare.
If you’re looking to book an acupuncture appointment but you’re not sure whether your insurance will cover it, the best way to get a definite “yes or no” is to get in touch with your insurance provider and ask them whether acupuncture is covered. You should also be able to find this information in the fine print, but for full peace of mind it’s best to contact your insurance provider directly.
The good news is that as acupuncture and other forms of traditional Chinese medicine gain more traction in the West, these treatments are increasingly being accepted by Western society and incorporated into insurance policies.
It’s worth reiterating that in most cases, acupuncture is not covered by Medicare, unless your acupuncturist is also a registered General Practitioner. If you’re looking for health insurance that covers acupuncture, be sure to read the fine print of the policy carefully and ask your potential insurer the question before taking out insurance with them.
